Go to for Piggies
The smell and feel of this hay is very fresh and the guinea pigs love it. It is compressed into the bag so when you try to use it and get some out, it makes a huge mess but thats really the least of worries. You get quite a large amount and is definitely less expensive than buying at a pet store

Stop me! I’m sticking my nose in the Oxbow bag again sniffing the sweet smelling fragrant hay.
When I first got my rabbits I fed them Kaytee brand timothy hay exclusively. They appeared to be eating it, but they always had so much leftover. I was at the vets and she suggested I try a different brand. In the back of mind I thought that was ridiculous. Hay is from a plant. How can a different brand be better? I did some research online and discovered that the hay is cut several times. I think rabbits eat the first and second cut of Timothy hay but some web sites call it the second and third cutting. I don’t know, but will call it the first and second cutting for explanations sake. First cutting of hay produces a greener product that has higher fiber and nutrients. It includes stems and seed heads. Although I thought you weren’t supposed to feed rabbits seeds, these are ok. They really look like a plant that has started to go to seed, but hasn’t set seeds yet. The second cutting can be green, but is leaf only so it has a lower amount of fiber. This cutting is softer. Some pets love this softness. Second cutting has less pollen, so if allergies are a problem, that is something to consider. The greener the hay, the higher the nutrient content. I tried Oxbow brand and my rabbits love it. When you open the package your nose is overwhelmed by the aroma of the hay. I did not have this experience with Kaytee brand. The rabbits immediately started eating the Oxbow, something they had never done before. The individual pieces of Kaytee are much smaller than the long pieces in Oxbow. Oxbow is green whereas most of the Kaytee I have purchased are browner. I think the freshness of the hay is determined by two factors, how green it was when it was cut, and how long it sits on a shelf before it is bought. My experience with Oxbow has always been a quality consistent product. I think this is one product that is really affected by how long it sits around. Be sure to buy it from a supplier that sells lots of it. My rabbits love this brand.I recommend it.

Expensive
This stuff is expensive and the guinea pigs love it. But, I just couldn’t afford it, so I went to Tractor Supply and got 50 pounds for only $30 and the guinea pigs like it the same. But they’re really trying to rip you off with this price. You can see the huge price difference between the one here and the 50 pound hay for only $30 at Tractor Supply.

Disappointing quality
I have bought this brand before, and this bag was very disappointing. Most of the bag is filled with what seems to be stale hay and stick-like hay. I would not buy again for my Guinea pigs.

Best for bunnies
My two bunnies love this brand. Less hay dust then others, and Timothy hay is what rabbits need 24/7. No issues with it so far- although sometimes it can be a little dusty. I’ve seen worse from other brands though.

Too straw-y and stiff!
Our guinea pigs weren’t a fan. We ran out of the kind we normally buy so had this delivered while we waited. There was a lot of “straw” and a lot ended up getting rejected and in the compost. If you have picky pigs who prefer the grassy and flower pieces, I would not recommend.

Not consistent
I know hay is a natural product, so there will always be some degree of inconsistency between bags, but I just had to stop using this product altogether. Some times the bags would be perfect but a lot of the times it seemed like I was getting leftover bad quality hay. I just go to my local feed store now and it is a lot cheaper for the amount of hay you get.

Great treat without sugar.
My two bunnies come running when they hear me open the bag. This treat is perfect because it’s made out of what they should be eating without it being a sugary fruit snack. We use them to reward behavior and to coax into grooming (which they hate). Perfect for dig boxes. I also soak them in liquid medicine they hate to take and they eat it right up.

Smells fresh, great quality.
This is my number 1 hay for our quinea pigs. The quality is great, smells fresh, perfectly dense in the package. It comes in big package which you can zip lock again, that part is little tricky, so I use clips for close it down. But the quality of the hay is great!

Best Guinea Pig Hay!
I have purchased this brand of hay for my guinea pigs ever since I got them. The hay is fresh and good quality. It is also a veterinarian recommended brand, which I love. My piggies absolutely love this hay! I also like that it lasts a while. For two guinea pigs it seems to usually last about six weeks or so. It will depend on how many pigs you have and how much they eat. I definitely like this brand. Would recommend!

Just this batch? Normally good.
I don’t normally write reviews bc I figure everyone knows (I think?) that the Oxbow timothy hay is pretty good. I’ve counted 16 bags that I’ve purchased prior, all nice, fresh and the last two were even delicate, almost green even, although there was a lot of tiny, fine pieces half way through the last one, my guinea pigs loved it! My new bag, I am hoping is a fluke, but concerned it could be related to food shortages (?), because it seems I was sent much older hay, it’s course, rough, dry, and long, hardly any smell. So, I called and asked for a refund (was able to do it online) but in the hands of sales agents, they said they ‘tried’, so I went with a manager, who was not very compassionate, let’s say. She said ”well! is there a date of expiration?” (on a bag of hay? generally no) I said: “I don’t know where to find it but I’m looking”, she said: “on. the. bag!” I said: “no….I was thinking it could be on my hand?” (lol, sarcasm) I said, “yes, of course I’m looking on the bag, there isn’t one, I’ve never seen such a thing on hay.” Also, you don’t want to refund it but yet can imagine there can be an expired bag but you still don’t want to? In my experience, it’s simply that there is older hay left or it’s out of season, or this is the best available of leftover batches (?) I mean, it was only in the last 5 months, I began finding long winding purple twigs and other odd things in the bags. Since it does say that odd things can be found, I didn’t call in, only one time when I found something a bit like spurs. So, my speculation that something is off should be heard with compassion. Well, I still hope it was a fluke but for right now, I’m going to have to get 2nd cut and pray it is better (iffy reviews on the ones I found) because right now, I have one guinea pig who is not wanting to eat it. If a guinea pig doesn’t eat hay for even one day they can get constipated, which for them, in 3 days can create bloat which is dangerous. So, I will wait 2 days for a bag of hay (this one took 3 and we were running low). Take my word here, and just make sure to have a backup, as it’s hard to know what to expect with these these days. I’m going to wait a few months before reordering any Oxbow product. Thank you for the past hay. Let’s hope it’s flukish.

Hay Hay
A good quality hay is a nutritional staple for a bunny even one with style flair. This is an important part and so far reliable one for him. The traditional Timothy hay is what he’s been using. You will want to take a quick look at different kinds as Alfalfa is used for more nutritional value when they’re little though it may be different for you. He enjoyed a slight addition of it to Timothy in his baby year.

Not sure how to rate
I’ve ordered this bag of hay many times and I’m finally writing a review for some assistance. I’m not sure how to review this bag.85% of the time I get a 90oz bag and it’s packed full of bright green, straw like hay with a lot of the fluffy looking tips on it. It’s long and straight and crunchy like. My guineas seem to like it and they especially like the fluffy tips. The other 15% of the time the 90oz bag arrives looking like the picture. It’s dark green, soft, not a lot of fluffy, crunchy tips. Are they both Timothy Hay?Is there a way to purchase the same kind consistently? Are they both good for Guinea pigs?Who can I talk to about this? The guineas eat both I just want to make sure they’re both actually good for the guineas.

Quality seems to vary more frequent now
I typically don’t write a review, but this issue feels ongoing. I really want to continue loving Oxbow Western Timothy Hay for my chinchilla however, I find it much more wasteful now and finding myself throwing a lot out daily. Everyone that has a chinchilla knows that they are quite the picky eater and for the past 4 months that I’ve had my subscription, I’ve gotten very hairlike/ dry rough yellowing hay that would constantly make a large mess. For the first 3 months that this became a major issue I decided to pause my subscription and try another brand before resuming, (figured I’d give the company benefit of doubt). Once I got the package of hay beginning of this month, it looked promising since it wasn’t hairlike except, I noticed that it looked a bit dry. The next morning, I saw that it had yellowed so quickly and my chinchilla barely ate any of it. It felt like such a waste of money and I’ve been using Oxbow for over two years now. In the beginning, it was once ever so often that I’d get a bad batch which I get it, weather impacts the hay. However, this has been back to back issues that I felt the need to cancel my subscription.I do hope others don’t have this issue like I do though and that I am one of the rare ones who got bad shipments.

Really good hay for my bunny and guinea pig
My bunny and guinea pig get fresh hay everyday and my guinea pig gets cleaned out at least four times a day because I don’t like her to be wet in any places I put the hay on top of pee pads that are also on top of towels so that she can be comfortable and she loves it

Yellow, dry hay
Ordinarily the Oxbow hay is great. It’s pretty green and “fresh” but this last bag is gnarly and our rabbits won’t even eat it. It is yellow and dry – I may as well have slummed it with a bag of Kaytee for a fraction of the price. We buy our bunnies good hay and this was terrible. I hate to write a bad review when it’s usually fine but I’m doing it to warn about buying this stuff on Amazon. As convenient as it is, sometimes this stuff has been sitting around too long or stored improperly.

Vet Recommended, Only Hay Brand I Buy!
I have only purchased Oxbow hay for my holland lop bunny, and she has loved it!PROS:- recommended by 2 of my vets!- always comes fresh, well sealed- great price, love that you can buy in bulk- my bunny has really loved Oxbow hay; I was nervous switching her from Alfalfa to Timothy once she was old enough but she adjusted perfectly!CONS:- sometimes it comes so packed into the bag that it is hard to grab handfuls at a time but with some tough love I always manage to get hay out of the bag and loosen it up

My piggies LOVE this
I’m a first time Guinea Pig owner, I bought some Timothy hay from another brand and the guys just picked at it. I finally had to get some Alfalfa (also by Oxbow) and they started eating a little better but I know that can’t be their main diet. I thought I would try this and see how it went and boy, they were two happy little piggies! Will not buy any other brand moving forward.

Variable experience both times
Bought the 40oz for my chinchilla twice – lasts Abt 6 months. First purchase: the bigger bag that’s shown in the description and picture. A bunch of it is inedible with small pieces and dust. The edible parts were fine2nd purchase arrived today- the smaller bag. I don’t know what oxbow is doing but they compressed the hay so much that once you open the bag, there’s no way to reseal it if you don’t remove a ton of it first. I had to move the new hay into the bag of the old hay just to be able to close it. Seems like they’re trying to save a bit of space but then loading a problem onto customers. The bag was reduced by at least 1/3 in size…the weight is probably the same but the bag size makes a big difference.

Good hay for my Holland lop
My bunny loves this hay. We switched from the botanical hay and she still loves this one! I am a little annoyed as the bottom of the bag always is not full length pieces of hay, mostly little shreddings my lop does not eat at all. I have to dump out the bottom and buy a new bag prematurely because of this..

Inconsistent Quality
Oxbow typically makes good food for small pets. However, I have found the quality of their Timothy hay is rather inconsistent, especially later in the year. I think it’s probably because they use 1st cutting hay toward the end of the year. My rabbit wastes a lot of that hay. In spring, it seems Oxbow starts shipping 2nd cutting hay that my rabbit enjoys a lot more and wastes little. It would be nice if consumers had the ability to order a specific cutting.

Looks nothing like pic.
This is a joke, this hay is so hard and so dry a horse wouldn’t eat it. It’s like they picked up some random blades on the side of a desert road and packed it. My bunny won’t even touch this, I barley like touching it. I used to get their orchard hay untill bugs where in there so I figured I try this, but oxbow u should be ashamed of urself for even putting this on the market.

This is the only brand of timothy hay we get for our piggies. We’ve never had any diet issues or anything. Every once in a while we get a bag that is pretty dry and it makes it a pain in the butt to get it out of the bag but our guinea pigs don’t seem to mind.

Great Hay
My guinea pig loves this hay. She also loves the sound of the bag, doing zoomies and popcorning around her cage when she hears it. I’ve had her for 2 months and we’re barely halfway through the bag. We do supplement with alfalfa and she gets a daily salad, so that may slow her down a bit. And she’s only 4 months old.
